LO3 Planning of Development for social media
LeiSURE, the sporting social media application.
Purpose
The purpose for my social media product is to connect local sports enthusiasts so as to create a community of people who can organise and socialise with each other. The purpose to the app is to help people organise sporting activities with new people and to hopefully help these people find partners and teams for future activities.
Content, Information flow and Function
The content of the site is split up into 2 parts, the Feed and Explore. The feed will mostly consist the posts that your connections have posted, events, photos and meetups. The explore section is there to encourage the userbase to find sporting events within there local area and expand there sporting connections within the site. There is also a tab of all the sports on the site, which would contain and updating feed of every events or photo posted on the site filtered by the sport selected.
The information flow on this application will be made as simple as possible so as to make the site asy to use for all types of people. The social media will be used mostly on smartphones in the form of an app, so to accommodate the smartphone market the app will have to be made so that it adjusts to the size of the screen of the device in use. In order to make the app as easy as possible to use, the layout has been designed so as to make it as simplistic as possible. The main page will be the home page that contains both the Feed and the Explore. To choose between these two options the user simply taps on the desired tab. To access the sports drop down the user taps the drop down indication box in the top left corner, this then blurs out the main pages and overlays a drop down box of sports that the user can scroll through and peruse to there pleasure. To open the profile page the user just taps over the profile name and picture in the top right corner.
The application will function in a similar way to social media applications like Tinder and Facebook. This means there will be a central hosting services for the site. A hosting service is a service that provides a server for the execution of software and storage of data. These servers are connected to a network making them easily accessible for both users and developers. These servers are good for hosting social media networks because of how reliable and secure they are. When using a hosting service everybody who connects to the site goes through these hosting services. This means that all website traffic between the devices of users and the host servers will have to be secured using SSL (Secure Socket Layers), this SSL secures all the information between the host and device behind protected layers so that it isn't easily intercepted by people with bad intentions. The hosting service for LeiSURE will have to be very reliable so as to prevent downtime for the website. After comparing hosting services, the most cost effective and reliable service is BlueHost.com.
Development
The development of the application is the most important part of the production process. In development of social media, it is common that the code is written in either Python, PHP or Ruby. This is because each of these languages lean more toward network programming than others therefore making them ideal for a social media project. Out of these languages I beleive Python is the proper choice for my project. I have chosen Python because of how versatile and adaptable the language is, once up and running the site will need updates and fixes and this versatility and adaptability will make it easier to expand the site and complete these fixes. Python is among the easiest programming languages to learn.
Target audience/ membership
There will be no membership for the app just a sign up process, this process would only require an email, password and username. There wouldn't be any cost to signing up, this is because in order to generate revenue on the social media, website traffic is needed. Therefore by making it a zero cost sign up it allows the application to be available to a wider audience and increase website traffic. By using a sign up process that is simple and easy to complete the application will be more appealing to its audience. LeiSURE is aimed at a younger audience in general, this is because a younger audience would be more open to the use of a social media to help them exercise. This extends from the fact that the younger generations during this time have grown up in the technology age and have more of a desire integrate technology into their daily life. More specially the target audience is any gender and ethnicity of people aged 18- 40 and of the demographics A,B,C1. These people will be sporting enthusiasts and participate in lots of sports during spare hours.
Production plan and launch date
Budget
The budget of application development varies depending on process. If it was decided upon that my project be developed professionally by app developers then it could cost anywhere from £40,000 to £50,000 in the UK or £10,000 to £25,000 in India. However in order to cut these unnecessary costs I could decide to develop it my self which would drastically reduce these costs to practically nothing. Web hosting for the site would be a monthly subscription fee of around £10 to begin with, assuming LeiSURE's user base is small after launch, then after it takes off and website traffic increases, hosting could go up to £99.99 a month.
possible revenue
Revenue from the site would be a difficult goal to achieve, however adverts seem to be the most profitable revenue stream for social media. LeiSURE is a sports social media so sporting goods companies could advertise there products, these would be companies like Nike and Pro Direct. The revenue from advertising on social media ranges from $2,000 - $20,000 a month depending on how much advertising traffic is generated.
